A large-headed mouthbrooder. Adult males combine a red body, dorsal ocellus and patterned caudal fin. These characters support recognition; locality and taxonomic comparison remain necessary.

A bubble-nester with green-blue iridescent flanks. The original description distinguishes it from B. uberis using dorsal-fin ray counts; colour alone is insufficient for identification.
