SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Chitala lopis

Giant featherback / belida · Notopteridae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Chitala lopis (Giant featherback / belida) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan evidence. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Rediscovered and taxonomically clarified after an Extinct assessment; the published IUCN label should not be read as current field absence.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
more than 100 cm TL
Habitat
Large lowland rivers and floodplain waters

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Conservation-led profile, not routine aquarium stock; enormous adult size and legal status require specialist review.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
