SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Hemibagrus nemurus

Javan River Catfish / Baung · Bagridae · Aquatic carnivore

Identity and native record

Hemibagrus nemurus (Javan River Catfish / Baung) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Java, following Ng & Kottelat (2013). “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

The 2013 revision restricts this name to Java. Many older Southeast Asian records belong to other Hemibagrus species; the common name baung is insufficient for identification.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Aquatic carnivore
Reported adult scale
specimens to 42 cm SL in the 2013 revision; not a maximum-size guarantee
Habitat
Large freshwater rivers

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Plan a large secure system with shelters, powerful filtration and companions too large to swallow; confirm adult requirements for the exact stock.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
