SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Channa limbata

Sunda dwarf snakehead · Channidae · Aquatic carnivore

Identity and native record

Channa limbata (Sunda dwarf snakehead) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan lineage records. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Indonesian fish long traded as Channa gachua require revised identification; current evidence supports C. limbata for the eastern lineage.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Aquatic carnivore
Reported adult scale
locality-dependent; verify line
Habitat
Streams, marshes and shallow vegetated waters

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Do not standardise care across locality forms; confirm adult size, temperature and social behaviour for the exact line.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
