SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Channa lucius

Forest snakehead · Channidae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Channa lucius (Forest snakehead) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan records. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

A genetically structured species complex; exact drainage data should be retained with every broodstock line.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 40 cm TL
Habitat
Forest streams, pools and swamp waters

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Large secure aquarium; predatory feeding plan and conservative compatibility assessment.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
