SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Channa melanoptera

Black-finned snakehead · Channidae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Channa melanoptera (Black-finned snakehead) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Sumatra and Kalimantan. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Current conservation and locality evidence should be reviewed before any commercial decision.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 65 cm TL
Habitat
Large lowland rivers and connected waters

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Monster-fish scale housing only; secure cover and a realistic lifetime plan are mandatory.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
