SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Channa melasoma

Black snakehead · Channidae · Aquatic carnivore

Identity and native record

Channa melasoma (Black snakehead) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Sumatra and Kalimantan records. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Retain collection locality because widespread names can conceal regional biological differences.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Aquatic carnivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 30 cm SL
Habitat
Forest streams and peat-swamp waters

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Secure covered aquarium; soft-water locality requirements and adult aggression need verification.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
