SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Channa micropeltes

Giant snakehead / toman · Channidae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Channa micropeltes (Giant snakehead / toman) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan native records. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Juvenile appearance radically changes with growth; suitability must be judged at adult scale.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 130 cm TL
Habitat
Rivers, reservoirs, lakes and flooded areas

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Not a routine home-aquarium species; requires exceptional space, containment and destination-law review.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
