SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Channa striata

Striped snakehead / gabus · Channidae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Channa striata (Striped snakehead / gabus) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Widespread native records across western Indonesia. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

A widespread species complex in genetic studies; stock identity cannot be inferred from a generic trade label.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 100 cm TL
Habitat
Rivers, wetlands, rice fields and floodplains

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Large, robust, secure housing; destination-country invasive-species rules can be decisive.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
