SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Hampala macrolepidota

Hampala Barb / Sebarau · Cyprinidae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Hampala macrolepidota (Hampala Barb / Sebarau) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Java and wider Sundaland; not a verified Bali-origin listing. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

The characteristic adult midbody bar differs from the two-spot Bornean H. bimaculata. Native distribution does not establish the origin of individual stock.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
up to 70 cm SL
Habitat
Rivers with clear, well-oxygenated flowing water

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Large active predator requiring exceptional swimming length, strong oxygenation and an adult-scale system; unsuitable for a routine community aquarium.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
