SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Luciocephalus pulcher

Pikehead · Osphronemidae · Piscivore

Identity and native record

Luciocephalus pulcher (Pikehead) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Belitung, Bangka, Sumatra and Kalimantan blackwaters. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Belitung is within the documented range, but a generic market animal cannot be assigned to the island without locality records.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Piscivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 20 cm SL
Habitat
Peat swamps, forest streams and flooded vegetation

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Highly specialised soft, acidic-water ambush predator; live-food dependency and stress sensitivity require expert planning.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
