SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Hephaestus obtusifrons

Striped Grunter · Terapontidae · Aquatic carnivore

Identity and native record

Hephaestus obtusifrons (Striped Grunter) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Upper Sermowai system in Indonesian Papua and Pual headwaters in Papua New Guinea. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Included under the broad predator/carnivore scope rather than labelled a strict piscivore. Its Vulnerable assessment is separate from any national protection or trade rule.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Aquatic carnivore
Reported adult scale
up to about 12.5 cm SL
Habitat
Fast, rocky mountain streams at roughly 200–400 m elevation

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

A rheophilic specialist requiring strong oxygenation, current and structurally complex stream habitat; it is not a generic community fish.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
