SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Mastacembelus erythrotaenia

Fire eel · Mastacembelidae · Invertivore / opportunist

Identity and native record

Mastacembelus erythrotaenia (Fire eel) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Sumatra and Kalimantan records. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Included under the broad carnivore scope; its feeding guild is deliberately distinguished from fish-eating predators.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Invertivore / opportunist
Reported adult scale
up to about 100 cm TL
Habitat
Slow rivers and soft-bottomed floodplain waters

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Very large escape-proof aquarium with soft substrate; predominantly benthic carnivore, not a strict piscivore.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
