SPECIES DOSSIER · RESEARCH STAGE

Pao palembangensis

Palembang puffer · Tetraodontidae · Aquatic carnivore

Identity and native record

Pao palembangensis (Palembang puffer) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Sumatra and Kalimantan records. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.

Freshwater puffer identity is often confused in trade; use accepted name, morphology and locality together.

Ecology and adult scale

Feeding guild
Aquatic carnivore
Reported adult scale
about 19 cm SL
Habitat
Slow rivers, lakes and vegetated freshwater

Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.

Welfare and suitability screen

Species-focused housing; beak wear, hard-shelled foods and aggression require specialist planning.

Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
