Identity and native record
Scleropages jardinii (Northern saratoga / Gulf arowana) is included because authoritative species records document native occurrence in Southern New Guinea, including Indonesian Papua; also Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. “Native to Indonesia” does not imply endemicity, captive availability, legal export, or permission to import.
This New Guinea–Australian species is not the CITES Appendix-I Asian arowana Scleropages formosus. Similar common names do not make their trade controls identical.
Ecology and adult scale
- Feeding guild
- Surface-oriented predator
- Reported adult scale
- up to about 100 cm TL
- Habitat
- Slow rivers, lagoons, billabongs and floodplain waters
Feeding guild is an editorial husbandry aid, not a complete diet prescription. Juvenile and adult diets, seasonal ecology and individual behaviour can differ.
Welfare and suitability screen
Very large, tightly covered specialist system; adult aggression, jumping risk, lawful origin and destination rules must be resolved before acquisition.
Before any future listing, LIMNIC would need to document the individual fish, expected adult dimensions, secure containment, water parameters, diet, compatibility, transport risk and the buyer’s capacity to provide lifetime care.
